Is Thailand safe for solo female travelers?

Thailand is generally safe for solo female travelers. However, exercising common sense and staying aware of the surroundings are important. The locals are friendly and helpful, but, as in any place, it's important to be cautious of who to trust. Be careful with belongings and avoid venturing out alone at night, especially in quieter areas. Majority of the people are respectful, friendly and will help if you're in need.

How safe is Thailand?

Safety at night:Moderate

While Thailand is generally considered a safe destination, night time can bring certain risks particularly in major cities and tourist areas. Cases of petty crime such as pickpocketing and theft are commonplace. Some areas are poorly lit and pedestrians have to be careful. Women, especially, should be cautious about their intake of alcohol and mindful of their belongings and wearing modest clothing to respect local customs. Traveling in groups is advised over walking alone.

Public transportation:Safe

Public transportation in Thailand is generally reliable and safe. This includes transportation such as city buses, taxis, tuk-tuks, songthaews, and Bangkok’s BTS Sky Train System and MRT Subway. There's an established culture of respect towards women in public spaces, including on public transportation. However, it's important to use common sense while using public transportation, in particularly crowded or late-night situations. Keep an eye on your belongings at all times, be aware of your surroundings, and try sticking to well-lit areas.

Street harassment:Low

Thailand is generally considered safe and respectful towards solo female travelers. While there might be occasional catcalling or unsolicited comments, it's not a widespread issue. Most locals show great respect towards visitors and are often very helpful. Nonetheless, as anywhere, it's advisable to maintain a level of caution, especially at night in less crowded areas. You may encounter touts trying to sell you something or directing you to shops, which is a common form of annoyance rather than harassment in tourist heavy areas. Thai culture is relatively conservative and dressing modestly can often help reduce unwanted attention.

Petty crimes:Moderate

While there is a risk for petty crimes such as pickpocketing or bag-snatching particularly in crowded areas or tourist hotspots, Thailand generally has a relatively safe environment for travelers if precautions are taken. Always keep your belongings secure and be aware of your surroundings to further lower your risks for such incidents.

Tap water:Unsafe

Tap water in Thailand is not generally considered safe to drink straight from the tap. Although it's typically treated and purified in cities, it can still contain bacteria, contaminates or heavy metals. It is recommended to stick to bottled or filtered water during your stay to reduce the risk of illness or infection.

I been to Bangkok few times but this time I’m flying solo, nothing different tho. I feel safe just riding BTS as my transportation going to places. As much as possible I do Take BTS as I travel around Bangkok or Book Day Tour on website or hotel itself. Specially the ones that railway can’t go. The body massage in Thailand is the best. Must try if you like body massage. My selection of Hotels are nearby BTS stations. so I could save time and money. As solo traveler I avoid going to bars. However I do go to the bar in the hotel I stay in.

Solo travel experience

I've visited Phuket, Chiang Mai, Krabi, Phi Phi, Ko Tao, Samui, and Phangan within a year. It's the place where I felt 100% safe, particularly when walking at night. I never received any unwanted attention from the locals. Unfortunately, I can't say the same for tourists or foreigners, but still, I was amazed by the place.

Thailand is a very safe place to travel. People are really nice and they truly love tourists. I would travel to Thailand again if I get the chance. I really recommend you to visit this amazing country whether alone or with your friends and family.

I’ve been solo-travelling in thailand for a total of two months. I’ve felt safe and at home throughout the entire country. One single time did I experience getting catcalled on the street. One single time in two months. People are kind, the food is great. Beautiful landscapes in the north and amazing beaches in the south. Overall my favourite southeast Asian country so far.

My first trip without family was a group trip to Thailand when I was 17. We toured around for a month, I felt safe the entire time, the locals are very friendly and happy. The weather is great, food is amazing , getting around is quite easy and everything is very affordable in general.

My experience in Thailand was AMAZING I stayed there for 3 months and visited : Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Koh Tao, Phuket, Koh Phi Phi, Krabi, Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai This country is really safe and there is always something to do, food is good and there are a lot of backpackers so it makes really easy to meet people I recommend this country as a first female solo trip !

I went to Nakhon Ratchasima, Forest tree resort and it was awesome. I rode some trail aventures and fun activities the resort offers and awesome room service and would love to go back again❤️ I felt safe during my stay in thailand. Awesome food as well. Although Im not a super big fan of spicy food they are kind enough to lessen the spice if your taste buds cant hold the spiciness of their food

Thailand is Really Safe for Solo Travellers, also for womans. Its Really easy to Go from A to B, because they are very well adapted to tourists. The only thing i don’t like in Thailand is that they quickly rip off tourists and that sucks.

I went to Thailand alone last October. I flew to Bangkok. I stayed near the airport. I was there for 2 days and booked a flight to Ko Samui, which I really liked. I jumped on a boat to Koh Phangan, where they have full moon parties, and the beach is beautiful. I spent my last 4 days in Bangkok and I really liked it too. I felt completely safe. Most people know a bit of English and are very nice. I really enjoyed it. I would go back there tomorrow if I could.

I spent most of my time in Bangkok and had 2 nights in Phuket as part of island tours. Phuket was very touristy and I probably should have chosen Pattaya instead. I felt very safe in both places.

I lived in Thailand for 5 years and traveled all over the place alone - it's totally safe. Of course, like anywhere, be aware of your surroundings and don't do risky things. Thailand and the Thai people are amazing.

It was fantastic trip i enjoyed it so much and i will go again. The weather is good and the people are great and the food is delicious. I had so much fun and i meet new friends in every island I visited.

I stayed in Thailand for a month. I visited Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Phi Phi, and Phuket. It's a safe place. Very enjoyable and fun everywhere. The nature is perfect. The food is cheap. Accommodation is affordable.
